Televisions seem to be getting flatter and flatter by the year, with technology offering LCD and Plasma hi-definition sets at reasonable prices nowadays.  In the past, everyone owned those clunky CRT style monitors, and if you wanted a big screen you most likely went with a really heavy one, or a projection style display.  Luckily, we have technology on our sides and can enjoy quality images from television and movies now, via a flat screen, making the TV easier to move, and taking up less space in your living environment.  Here we present our Vizio SV370XVT 37″ LCD HDTV review. In replacing our heavier and clunkier 32 inch TV set we had sitting in the living room, we decided to check out the options for flat screens.  That brought up the LCD vs. Plasma debate that many TV buyers go through.  Various information sources will tell you that Plasmas can use more energy, and are generally better TV’s for movie viewing, while TV viewers will enjoy LCD’s.  In terms of energy, most new TV models are Energy star rated, and the plasmas are starting to become more reasonable.  However, we found the Vizio SV370XVT LCD HDTV set to be a decent replacement size, and at $700 to $800, a good deal for a 37 inch 1080p LCD HDTV from a well known manufacturer.

For features, this set offers a handy remote to control all your on-screen menu choices.  One thing we would suggest for VIZIO’s upgrades to this particular LCD, is to add some sort of control panel on the monitor itself.  This TV only has a ON/OFF button on the side, and should your remote die, you’ll have a hard time making other changes on the TV setup, etc.  Not a big deal for many, as these days you can program universal remotes to work with the TV’s.  Speaking of that, the included remote with the VIZIO will control other devices if needed.  We really don’t use this function due to the fact our DVR DISH remote does all that work.

For inputs/outputs this TV has a nice array to work with.  The VIZIO 37″ 1080p LCD HDTV inputs include S-Video, HDMI Port, 1 Component Video , 1 Composite Video , 1 S-Video , 1 PC , and 3 HDMI.  Many sets have less than 3, so this allows for plugging in your Hi-definition cable or DISH HDMI cable, a Blu-ray player and a video game system.  The PC input is very nice as well, but with many laptops these days including HDMI, you’ll probably want to swap that cable to your laptop at times to enjoy its benefits.

One thing we particularly enjoy is the USB slot on the left side of the Vizio TV set.  This allows you to play videos, display pictures and play MP3 songs from a flash drive of any size (not included).  Two things with this; we aren’t particularly fond of the size that images display at (they appear like thumbnails on the screen), and we’d love if this had support for other USB devices, i.e. iPods or USB external hard drives.  But these are definitely not selling points on this model.

We’ve had no complaints over the TV display, color, or sharpness of hi-def TV channels.  This is a 1080p set which is top of the line.  It offers a variety of modes for viewing movies, sports and other programs.  Colors look brilliant, vivid and sharp on this set, and you can really tell the difference from a HD channel to standard channels.  Switch on a hi-def NHL hockey game or NFL football game and you’ll really experience sports as they were meant to be!  Plugging in our laptop via HDMI has also provided very nice images, whether it be a HQ YouTube movie trailer, or watching a TV show via Hulu.com.  While we don’t own any video game systems yet to test on this, we suspect it will do the job quite nicely with a PS3, 360 or Wii.

Sound has also been satisfactory, and at times the SRS advanced sound technologies kick in to really bring various programs to life.  For example, a NASCAR race produced sounds of speeding race cars which sounded like they were going around the room.  Not too shabby for the stereo speakers from the set.

The size of this TV is perfect for many living rooms, family rooms, dens or even master bedrooms.  It’s only 2.2″ deep, which tells you that flat screens keep getting flatter and more convenient for your living spaces.  Many people may feel this is a bit on the small size, but if you’re upgrading from a 25, 27 or 32 inch, you’ll definitely enjoy the bigger size.  We’ve mounted this on our fireplace mantle, using its included stand, and the TV fits just right, with no shaking or worries over the TV falling.  The TV has a weight of approximately 35lbs, and dimensions of 24.8 ” x 35.5 ” x 9.2 “.  Others may choose to buy an additional mounting kit, or simply put it on a TV cart/entertainment center.

We recommend this set for its color, features (including PIP and SRS advanced sound technologies) and the ability to use plenty of inputs as well as the USB slot for multimedia presentations.  As mentioned we’d love it if VIZIO included support for hard drives and other USB capable devices, and if they put even a small control panel on the TV for adjusting settings.  Otherwise, if you can get this set for $700 or less, scoop up this VIZIO and enjoy it with all your home multimedia entertainment!
